About Your A/C

The team at Garland Transmissions understands that your transportation’s properly working air conditioner is a matter of comfort for everyone and medically necessary for some. Regardless of your unique needs, it’s a good rule of thumb to have us check your car’s A/C about once a year, preferably before the temperatures soar and you need it the most. This system uses dual low- and high-pressure sides to enable the refrigerant to change physical states as it travels. The compressor, condenser, evaporator, and receiver/drier/accumulator are major components. Driven by a belt, the compressor increases the refrigerant’s pressure through compression, allowing it to absorb heat. Conversely, the condenser releases heat, allowing the refrigerant to become a more condensed liquid. The evaporator’s job is to absorb more heat to continue cooling the air. The accumulator, also called the receiver or drier, removes moisture to make the air that enters your passenger cabin more comfortable. It also removes contamination so that it doesn’t continue circulating and damage the system. Other key parts include the blower motor, which moves cool air from the evaporator to the car’s interior, and the orifice tube/expansion valve, which regulates refrigerant flow. The most commonly needed repair is refrigerant recharge. This may be required a few times over the life of a car, but it shouldn’t be a frequent occurrence. If it is, we’ll need to find the leak. If the refrigerant level is low, you’ll notice that the air entering through your vents isn’t cool enough. If there’s no cold air, the compressor is likely bad. An electrical problem such as a broken wire is probably to blame if the system fails to power. Beware of puddling water or wet carpet under the dash. A clog that causes a water backup can result in physical interior damage and mildew. Also, let us know immediately if you detect a nasty, damp odor each time you engage the A/C system. It’s a potential indicator of mold that we’ll need to remediate quickly so that you’re breathing clean air.
